The NSW Department of Planning and Environment (DPE) has an exciting opportunity for a Scientist (Data Analyst) to join our Environmental Water Planning team to provide spatial data analysis and modelling to inform our delivery of large projects across the NSW Murray-Darling Basin.


Job Grade / Classification: Environment Officer Class 7 - Salary starting at $97,933 + super

Employment Type: Temporary Full-time (to 30 June 2025)

Location: Queanbeyan preferred, Albury considered for suitable candidates.


The successful applicant will work collaboratively with staff across DPIE and other NSW government agencies to deliver improved river and wetland health outcomes. You will be working alongside more senior staff and have the opportunity to build your skills in the fields of ecohydrology, spatial data analysis and data management while contributing to large scale projects of State significance.


Essential Requirements

  • Relevant scientific or engineering qualifications and experience in data processing, modelling, and spatial analysis, ideally for ecohydrological applications

  • Experience in spatial analysis using GIS software and managing large spatial datasets, preferably in a coding environment
  • Ability to undertake data management and archival tasks, including the processing and cataloguing/storage of modelling outputs

  • Experience writing technical reports and presenting work to project partners and stakeholders

  • Experience working collaboratively within multi-disciplinary teams and organisations to deliver successful projects
  • Ideally some experience in developing code and coding workflows using R and/or python

  • Self-motivated and eager to contribute to team outcomes through innovation and the development of technical skills in spatial data management.
